Have you ever felt lonely at uni? It's completely normal and you aren't alone.

University is an exciting time that presents you with opportunities that you may not have had access to previously, including the chance to meet so many new people from different backgrounds, with their own stories.

However, it is totally normal to feel a bit out of your depth and feel too caught up in your studies to prioritise socialising.

We wanted to create an opportunity for students to meet other students that they may not have otherwise had a chance to connect with.

This is where UWLSU's Buddy Scheme can come in handy.

Here are three reasons you should sign up:

  1. Universities have so many students and you won't necessarily come into contact with all of them

If you are looking to connect with other students outside of your normal social circle, the Buddy Scheme could be the perfect opportunity to do so. Some of your best friends that you are yet to meet might be in the same space as you right now!

  1. You can find new people on your course

Even on your own course, there might be students that you have not had a chance to connect with outside of lectures. You could also use the buddy scheme as an opportunity to connect with students on the same course in different years.

  1. A chance to push yourself outside of your comfort zone

Pushing yourself socially will be one of the most valuable skills you learn and

what better place to do it than at university, where you are surrounded by likeminded people who are also likely looking to make new friends. Whether in future jobs, interviews or social situations, this is something you can bring forward into each stage of your life.

Buddy Scheme Testimonial

Namira is our current SU President and is an example of where the Buddy Scheme has allowed a new connection to flourish.

"I joined the buddy scheme back in 2024 and it helped me connect with people outside my course, making my university experience more diverse and enjoyable". - Namira
