Biomedical School Society

Updated: Apr 12

This year at UWLSU, we’ve had a whole range of incredible Societies start up. This is your chance to find out a bit more about who they are, what you can expect from them and the kinds of communities they are building! Today, we are looking at the Biomedical School Society...

Umberto is in his first year at UWL, studying Biomedical Science. He’s been passionate about his chosen subject for some time and has been part of restarting the Biomedical School Society!

When beginning his journey at uni, the society caught Umberto’s eye as one he wanted to join and after discovering it wasn’t active, he contacted the Students’ Union about getting it back up and running. This started Umberto’s position as the Chairperson, where he was quickly joined by more students looking to help. Umberto was motivated by the potential that he knew the society had to create a community, help students to learn and work together to gain valuable experience.

Umberto’s experience with the SU has been amazing so far. He joined the university after hearing about the reputation and positive ranking UWLSU has, and it has definitely lived up to his expectations. He has been blown away by how big the community is here and how lively uni life is. Umberto has fully embraced what being a student is about, by throwing himself into his studies and getting involved in events and societies!

“I’ve never experienced a community so big; it shocked me. I’ve never had this, so it’s really fun.”

What can you expect from the Biomedical School Society?

The Society’s committee have a clear vision of the kinds of things they want to achieve and have already started putting plans into place. One thing is guest lectures, with speakers from other universities and across the field, to help students gain more knowledge outside of classes. They also want to create more opportunities to dive deeper into subjects taught in lectures, by building relationships with teachers and having study groups. Finally, Umberto is hoping to organise debates, within the Society as well as with other universities and potentially competing!

The Biomedical School Society is open to all students interested in learning about any subjects related to Biomedical Science. They want to build a diverse group of students, who all have an interest in learning. So, whatever you’re studying, if this group sparks your interest, join now!
