Being part of opportunities outside of his course has made Dinesh's uni experience what it is. From being a Course Rep to a Committee member - let's dive into his time at UWL.
Joining the Nepalese Society was a game changer for Dinesh; helping to grow his network, step up to take on new opportunities and find a community. When he started his course in Computer Science, Dinesh had just moved to London from a rural part of Nepal, meaning everything was new to him. Facing a big change can be incredibly challenging, but being able to connect with other students from Nepal meant he was able to settle in quickly.
"When I came to uni, everything was new, there are new technologies and systems. It was challenging for me, but my friend helped me a lot and because of her I joined the society as well."
Through pushing himself to join extra curricular activities, Dinesh has been able to find out about other services the university has that has helped him along the way. Joining ATAL, our computing society, Dinesh has grown technical skills needed to do well on his course. He has also built relationships with his lecturers, which helped to build the confidence to fully engage in lessons and make the most out of lectures.
"It has been really helpful with my journey at university."
The list goes on with things Dinesh has put himself forward for, including being a Course Rep and Peer Mentor. He has grown in confidence immensely, especially as becoming a Course Rep means advocating for your peers to the people in charge - including your own lecturers. Dinesh owes a lot of his confidence to joining UWLSU's Course Rep Programmes, and choosing to be the bridge between students and lecturers.
"Being a Course Rep has helped me in terms of building my confidence. You also get to be familiar with the lecturers and your fellow students; you get to know what are they are facing."
The biggest ways Dinesh has grown since starting uni, is in confidence, communication skills and professional experience. All huge contributions to building his future career!
