Dressed to the Nines: Our Glamorous Night at the Union Awards 2023

Updated: May 16, 2023

This year’s Union Awards were a raging success, with everyone embracing the excitement of the night and celebrating the past year at the Students’ Union.

All the guests of the 2023 Union Awards showed up in style, making the red carpet feel like the Met Gala! The night started with a drink's reception on the red carpet; the energy was high, and everyone was in a fantastic mood. This year the theme was ‘Vintage Circus’, with sparkling cocktails and spinning centre pieces. It really was a night to remember.

The show kicked off incredibly, with each student supporting every nominee and winner. The celebrations of each category were loud and enthusiastic; it really showed how strong the community is within the SU, and how much everybody supports each other. It’s not just the nominees that contribute to the Students’ Union, it’s every single person that interacts with anything we do, and we couldn’t be more grateful and proud of the students at UWL. Let’s have a look at the lucky winners from the night:

Each winner was thrilled to hear their name announced on stage. We spoke to some of them for a red-carpet interview, here’s some highlights from how they felt just after receiving their award...

“I’m actually really shocked! This just proves that I have support from all my colleagues at uni and just makes me want to strive to do more for the criminology community. This is amazing.”

Mya Khan, SHSS Course Rep of the Year

“I didn’t think I was going to get it at all, this is wild. I’m so thankful and so excited, I feel amazing!”

Orla Toolan, Sports Team Member of the Year

“It’s my honour and pleasure to be at this university, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime and I love you all”

Bojan Vemic, SCE Course Rep of the Year

“It’s good to have recognition for the causes that matter, that’s really what we’ve been trying to spread this year and to see that it’s supported by everyone else.”

Men’s Rugby, Sport's Team of the Year

Our Sabs, Lewis and Maisie, took the stage by storm with their incredible hosting. They had the best time rounding off their year by putting on an event for the students that they have spent their time advocating and working for. They both gave a moving speech to end the night, showing their gratitude for their experience. Here’s a snippet of what they said:

“I would like to thank everyone who has been with me through my journey and thank you for letting me help you through yours. You’ve been an incredible year to have been a service to and I wish you the best of luck for the future.”

- Lewis Dixon, VP Activities

“Having the honour of working for all of you this year has been truly amazing. I genuinely could not have asked for a better group of people to have shared this experience with. The hard work you have put in over this year is genuinely something to be proud of.”

- Maisie Kelly, President

Thank you to everyone who attended for making the night amazing, we can’t wait for next year!
