Sharnelle's dedication to building her career is inspiring, as she sees the potential in every opportunity. Let's find out how she's getting on at UWL...

Now in her final year, Sharnelle has enjoyed every minute studying her bachelor's in Advertising and Public Relations. Through her course, Sharnelle has found countless opportunities to gain experience. On top of pitching campaigns to real companies, lecturers and UWL staff always share roles that they think would benefit students. For example, Sharnelle has been working for a music festival, where she manages marketing campaigns to promote their sales.

"There are so many opportunities for students to develop their career."

Lecturers can shape a student's whole experience of a course and what Sharnelle loves about her degree is that all her lecturers are full of energy, bringing passion to every lecture. They also all work in their profession outside of teaching, so have real-life examples and current experience.

The community around campus really stands out to Sharnelle and she is always ready to meet new people. From walking around campus, to going to events – Sharnelle always feels welcome due to the friendly community that we have here at UWL.

UWLSU has a full events and activities programme that gets everyone involved. Sharnelle loves going to activities put on by the SU because of how they showcase the vibrancy of the community and the positivity that the students bring to every environment.

"The community is energetic and everyone gets along really well with each other."

Sharnelle has worked for UWLSU as student staff for two years now. Starting off in commercial crew (Freddie's and Coffee Union) and now also working on the Front Desk! She has learned a lot from her roles, including leadership skills, confidence and communication. Her managers have always pushed her to be the best she can be and working in the SU has allowed her to make so many new friends.

"The management have been really, really kind and helpful. I've also made a lot of friends."

During her time here, Sharnelle has utilised the careers service, finding different job opportunities, building employability skills and creating her portfolio. If she has one piece of advice for students it's to "go to the careers team and apply to jobs" because that has excelled her progress a lot.

She also pushes people to network and meet as many people as they can:

"You need to get to know as many people as possible because you never know who you're going to need in your future"
