There are loads of ways to find your community and get involved at UWLSU. An amazing way to build new friendships is to join a student group! Whether you’re trying something new or continuing a long-lasting hobby, there are so many options to take part in groups that will welcome you with open arms.
Today, we take a look at sports teams and Izzy’s experience in UWL Netball...
It’s no secret that joining a sports team is an incredibly fun experience and shapes university for a lot of students. This is exactly what Izzy’s time in Netball has been like so far. Joining the team has helped Izzy to grow in so many different ways, especially in confidence. A big part of this is being able to find a strong group of supportive friends, which really helps to make university memorable.
“I think it's made me more confident. I think it's brought my personality out. I think if I wasn't in a team, I'd be shy and I would probably be doing uni by myself. Joining a sports team, I feel like I can open up to people, I've got friends and I'm just way more confident in myself.”
Before coming to uni, Izzy played netball throughout school, so knew she loved the sport already. Playing at university has meant she has been able to expand her skills and continue to challenge herself on the court. Playing with different people gives Izzy the opportunity to test her ability and lean into the competitiveness of the sport.
Being part of a team gives you a strong community of people around you, and there is also a wider community within all the sports teams at UWLSU. They come together for socials, get to know each other outside of uni and create real bonds.
“You can literally just talk to anyone about anything. You've got support from everyone. Like everyone's just so kind. It's like another family for sure.”
Thinking about joining a team but not sure which one or whether it’s the right thing for you? Here’s Izzy’s advice:
“I'd say, Do all the tasting sessions or do whatever they offer for you whilst not having a membership. Just do it like if they do a taste, a social and stuff like that, just do everything and just talk to people about it.”
