School Rep Term Round-Up

Your School Reps have been working hard over the first semester to improve your experience. This involves; gathering feedback, reaching out to students, speaking to Course Reps, attending School Board meetings, engaging with lecturers and working on any feedback they receive to make sure it gets resolved.


Let's find out what their highlights are from the past few months:


Katy: London College of Music


3 wins...

  • Met directly with Head of School to maintain bridge of communication between the SU and LCM.

  • Maintained open dialogue with students to ensure satisfying outcomes.

  • Kept up to date with trends and happenings UWL wide to be able to provide students with current information.



What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Getting to expand my network within the university, whether it be with students or staff.

  • Reconnecting with returning course reps and seeing how their experience is going.

  • Supporting students to make their voices heard.


What I'm looking forward to...

  • Continuing to build a closer relationship with LCM staff .

  • Engaging students in the course rep program during refreshers.

  • All the events and activities the SU will continue to help put on next semester.


Aleynah: College of Nursing, Midwifery + Healthcare (London)


3 wins...

  • Conducting outreach surveys, speaking to almost 200 students.

  • Supporting nursing students who have returned to education after time away, to navigate Blackboard and improving their confidence with IT.

  • Winning UWLSU student staff of the month.





What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Socialising and working with students from different backgrounds.

  • Course Rep Socials and meetings!

  • Being the voice for positive change.


What I'm excited for...

  • Getting to know the Course Reps more.

  • Supporting students throughout the term.

  • Making Paragon more inclusive and increasing SU presence on this campus.


Ellie: College of Nursing, Midwifery + Healthcare (Reading)

  • Getting all my assignments submitted this semester and feeling like I've done a good job after putting so much time and effort into them.

  • Being prepared for my lectures and being able to gain a better understand of every subject.

  • Doing well on my mock exams!





What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Working with people from different school; it has allowed me to talk to new people who I might not have met otherwise! I like working in a friendly environment where I can reach out for help if I ever need it.

  • I enjoy being able to help people! I love how students feel they can trust me to sort out their problems and handle issues that may be personal for them.

  • Putting myself in a new situation has allowed me to overcome some anxieties I face surrounding talking to new people. Being a rep has helped me to grow my confidence.


What I'm excited for...

  • I'm excited to start my health and illness modules - it's the part of my course I'm most looking forward to!

  • I'm looking forward to my placement as I get to see what it's like to be a nurse and I also get to meet new people.


Freddie: London School of Film, Media + Design

3 wins...

  • The changes made to the library to support students requiring more powerful machines was a massive win for me!

  • Opening channels of communication between staff and students across multiple courses across multiple schools!

  • Gaining an understanding of the higher workings of the school, both mine and others. I think this will help me tremendously next semester!


What I’ve enjoyed this semester...

  • Getting involved in the many meetings that LSFMD hold, and through them creating new contacts and relationships with staff and peers.

  • Getting to know a wider body of students at UWL! The calls are great for that! I love seeing how other schools operate and meeting students with different interests!

  • Working in and with such an inclusive team, which includes both the full time and student staff at the SU. Everyone is always so friendly and helpful!


What I’m excited for... 

  • I’m looking forward to putting into practice long-term feedback surrounding communication and availability.

  • I’m looking forward to connecting with students (especially level 4) who now have even more feedback and experience to pass on!

  • I’m looking forward to building a connection with an even wider group of students from an even wider pool of schools.


Vivian: School of Computing + Engineering

  • Becoming a School Rep! I wanted to push myself to achieve things outside of my comfort zone and I have been learning a lot about myself through this role.

  • Helping people is something I have always loved to do. I've been able to help a lot of students through my role and that's a win for me.




What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • I have met a lot of people since becoming a rep and feel part of the UWL community. I've enjoyed listening to student feedback and providing a safe space for students to express themselves and find solutions for them.

  • The SU training sessions have been really fun, because we get to learn something and socialise with other reps.

  • I've enjoyed working with lecturers and staff to make real change. I also get to go to boards and committees for SCE and different courses, to see what change is being made.


What I'm excited for...

  • I'm looking forward to making even more of an impact next term as a School Rep.

  • This term, I have been working with the Women in Tech Society and academic staff to organise hacathons for students!

  • I'm excited about the prospect of inviting tech companies to careers fairs to give SCE students more opportunities! UWLSU's Women in Tech Society are a driving force behind this.


Ayesha: Claude Littner Business School


3 wins...

  • I worked with module leaders to get solutions for students on different courses, including International Business Management.

  • I got to advocate for students at the termly School Board. They really valued my opinion on different subjects.

  • Helping to coordinate the Course Rep Social alongside the Student Voice team, which focussed on developing their skills.


What I enjoyed this semester...

  • I enjoyed taking on new responsibility and being there to listen to students' feedback and help to find solutions for any problems.

  • Working with other School Reps and seeing all of our work come together to help students excel.

  • I enjoyed working closely with Course Reps to get insight into how students are getting on at uni.


What I'm excited for...

  • I am excited to continue to support current and new students to navigate their journey.

  • I look forward to making even more change with Course Reps, staying in close contact with them to make sure we are actioning all feedback.

  • I can't wait for the Union Awards!


Josiah: London Geller College of Hospitality + Tourism


3 wins....

  • A win for me was honestly managing my various workloads in my final year, in the context of being a school rep it would be fulfilling my role and responsibilities to the best of my ability.

  • Positive engagement with almost all the Course Reps from LGCHT, the overwhelmingly good feedback from them about the lecturers, course structure and materials.



  • Helping course reps with their university experience issues and relating to them, helping them feel heard. On specific instance was a CR who felt bogged down by assessment deadlines and who struggled with time management. I got her course leader and dissertation supervisor involved and they gave personal advice and availed help for time management for her assessments which she felt was helpful.


What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • I enjoyed the sense of community that’s found within the School Reps. It’s reassuring being in close contact with a group of people doing similar work to you and facing similar issues.

  • Being able to listen and help my fellow schoolmates. Knowing there is a system in place to deal with the day-to-day issues that come with university life is satisfying and reassuring.

  • I enjoyed the openness of the Course Reps and their passion for their respective courses that was represented in the calls and the Course Rep meetings. It’s refreshing to see students engaged and passionate about their education and university experience.


What I'm excited for...

  • I look forward to working with the Student Voice team and the rest of the SU staff as everyone is so welcoming and hardworking. It definitely fosters a healthy workplace and empowers a good work ethic.

  • I'm excited to tackle more school-wide issues to make LGCHT an even better school and overall university experiences for current and future students.

  • I look forward to working closely with the course leaders in LGCHT and academic staff as they care a lot about the students and their experience here at university, I feel supported and heard in these spaces and meetings.


Olivia: Drama Studio London

  • Elected more Course Reps than DSL has ever had before!

  • Helping a student tackle their accommodation worries.

  • Met with heads of school and course leads to discuss student feedback







What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Getting to know the new first year students at DSL.

  • Meeting prospective students at open days.

  • Engaging more with the whole university, as well as my school.


What I'm excited for...

  • Recording more clips for my spotlight.

  • Performing ona West End stage for my showcase.

  • Devising our own physical theatre show.


Shrushti: School of Law


3 wins...

  • Bringing back our School of Law trip.

  • Facilitating timetabling changes to make sure students are happy and able to study effectively.

  • Being able to make real change on courses within the SoL.







What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Seeing personal growth, especially with communicating and understanding how to be helpful for students.

  • Working with the SU and all my amazing fellow School Reps!

  • Engaging with so many students and staff across campus.


What I'm excited for...

  • The next round of Course Rep elections in February.

  • Ongoing Course Rep phone calls to gather feedback and meeting more students to hear their thoughts on their course.

  • The annual Star Awards, where we can celebrate UWL staff.

Bee: School of Human + Social Sciences


3 wins...

  • Setting up monthly meetings with the head of SHSS, where we are able to work on student feedback.

  • Completing Course Rep elections and pushing myself out of my comfort zone by speaking in front or large groups.

  • My biggest win was seeing that students have confidence in me and felt able to approach me.



What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Settling into my new role as the SHSS School Rep, as I've had the opportunity to grow my confidence.

  • Getting to meet new students, especially from my school.

  • I've enjoyed feeling like I'm helping students and making a difference in the university.


What I'm excited for...

  • Electing even more Course Reps in February, as it has been great to see the current reps be so active in wanting to help their cohorts.

  • I am excited to keep growing personally and professionally in this role.

  • I want to explore new development opportunities whilst helping students.


Umberto: School of Medicine + Biosciences

  • Course Rep elections alongside the Big Conversation helped me to be introduced to the SU and feel confident working with them.

  • Getting to know the Course Reps and establishing trust in them!

  • Managing and resolved issues within SMB, e.g. establishing dissertation advice for Level 5 students.




What I've enjoyed this semester...

  • Getting to know my colleagues in the SU.

  • Learning about the responsibilities of different teams within UWL and how they work together.

  • I enjoyed the Course Rep elections and getting to recruit new reps, especially with the new cohort.


What I'm excited for...

  • Now that I know more about my role as a School Rep, I look forward to working more effectively.

  • Organising a social for Course Reps in Freddie's!

  • Resolving more issues involving my school and getting the best result for students.
