Abigail is an Acting student, who has thrown herself into socialising at uni and works at the Students' Union!
From day one, Abigail was ready to make the most out of the opportunities at university, and it has given her the ability to invest in her education. Studying in the arts can be daunting because of the competitiveness of the industry and Abi's lecturers are always trying to combat that. She hears about so many opportunities that give her a step up in her future career! Lecturers always take time out to make sure students are getting what they need from the course. Abigail has ADHD and has always felt supported through her journey - whether that's lecturers going over topics after class or reaching out for support from UWL's wellbeing teams.
"There's so much help in this university and I'm so grateful for it."
Abi has put in the effort to develop professionally outside of her course too! She works in UWLSU's Commercial Crew, serving customers in Coffee Union and Freddie's. This has pushed her to grow her communication skills and network with people she wouldn't have otherwise. For her, the SU is a healthy work environment that enables her to learn every day and put different skills into practice. It's the perfect part-time job for a busy student!
The SU is a nice, healthy work environment and you learn every single day."
At the beginning of university, it took Abi some time to be open to new experiences. After a while, she pushed herself to get involved with events and socialise outside of her course. Taking part in the SU's smaller events helped Abi to thrive in uni social settings. Chilled socials, with a smaller group of students, meant that everyone had a chance to get to know each other and make real connections.
"I think those small events brought people together."
A piece of advice Abigail wants to leave with students, is that it's never too late to put yourself out there and get involved.
