When Umberto Barbi started his Bioscience degree at the School of Medicine and Biosciences, he didn’t quite know what to expect. He thought university might be a bit divided, sports people with sports people, societies doing their own thing, but what he found at UWL was something completely different.

"It’s better than I expected. Everyone’s included in everything. I love how inclusive UWL is, it really makes everyone feel part of the same community."

From events like Oktoberfest to chill socials and study sessions, Umberto quickly discovered a university where you can be yourself, explore new things, and meet people from everywhere.

Finding His People Through the Students’ Union

Most of Umberto’s friendships came through the Students’ Union.  He’s now a School Rep for the School of Medicine and Biosciences, working closely with lecturers and staff to make sure students’ voices are heard. That experience, he says, has changed everything.

"What I love about the Students’ Union is that you can get involved, make real friends, and learn how the uni works. It’s not just work but being part of something bigger."
"Being School Rep has really helped me grow. It’s improved my communication, confidence, and even my knowledge of my own course."

Learning to Speak Up and Step Forward

Looking back, Umberto admits he was nervous at first, especially about speaking in front of others. But through course presentations, SU projects, and just pushing himself to try, he found his voice. That mindset has shaped his university life and he’s quick to encourage others to do the same.

"In your first year or foundation year, do as much as possible. Join societies, go to events, make friends, and push yourself out of your comfort zone."
His Favourite Part? The People.
"Honestly, getting to know my group of friends, doing events together, hanging out, that’s my favourite part. Just building those friendships."
Advice for New Students
"Do as much as you can. Say yes to things that scare you a little. Uni is when you learn to be independent and figure out who you are, so enjoy it and make the most of it. "
