Now in her final year of Finance and Management at the Claude Littner Business School, Cynen Coutinho has built a university experience filled with growth, confidence, and community. From volunteering and networking to representing her classmates as a Course Rep, Cynen has made the most of every opportunity UWL has to offer.

Building Connections and Confidence

When Cynen first started university, she described herself as a little shy. Through group projects, course rep meetings, and volunteering, she’s grown more confident and connected.

"Being a course rep really helped me build confidence and improve my public speaking. I wasn’t very confident before, but now I feel like I’ve gained leadership skills that are essential for my career."

As a Course Rep for two years, Cynen has worked closely with staff and peers to share feedback and improve the student experience.

Support That Makes a Difference

One of the things Cynen values most about UWL is the supportive community. Lecturers are approachable and quick to respond, especially during exam time. Balancing work and study has taught her to stay organised, a big adjustment from her early days at uni.

"When I started university, I was a last-minute person. Now I’ve learned how to plan and organise myself better."

Getting Involved Beyond the Classroom

Cynen’s also taken part in volunteering through UWL, from food packing at a local food bank to sustainability events on campus.

"Volunteering through the uni helped me meet people from different courses and build my network. It’s been great for connecting and preparing for the future."
Her Advice to Future Students

"I started off as a really nervous person, and now I’m ending my degree with so many skills like communication, leadership, confidence. So if you’re nervous, don’t worry. UWL is really supportive and full of opportunities. Go to job fairs, take part in events, and make the most of everything the uni offers. "
