When Alberto Joel Cornelio Gallardo first started to study Law at UWL, he didn’t just want to get a degree but he wanted to understand how the real world of legal practice works. Now, after completing both his LLB and LLM in Legal Practice (SQE) at the School of Law, Alberto looks back on his time at university as a journey of confidence, connection and discovery.

Finding Support Every Step of the Way

For Alberto, UWL stood out for one big reason: how genuinely supportive everyone is. Having briefly studied elsewhere, he realised just how much UWL staff go the extra mile. From lecturers who were always approachable, to the Careers Team who helped refine his CV and interview skills, Alberto says he always felt guided.

"UWL is a very supportive university. If you raise your hand and ask for help, you get the help. You get the books, the support, everything you need."

Representing His Peers

During his studies, Alberto was also elected School Rep, an experience that gave him a whole new perspective on how the university works.  That insight gave him not just confidence, but also practical leadership skills, something he knows will be vital in his legal career.

"Being a rep helped me see how teachers make decisions and what it really means to represent students. It was eye-opening to see that side of things."

From Salsa to the SU

Outside of lectures, Alberto brought people together in a different way: Through dance. He founded the Salsa Society, helping students from all backgrounds connect and unwind. Though he juggled study and work, the experience of running a society taught him how to plan, budget and lead a project, skills that translate far beyond the dance floor.

"Working with the SU team to set up events showed me how much support there is behind the scenes. You bring your idea, and they help make it happen."
His Advice to Future Students

"Enjoy it. Don’t compare your path to others. Grades matter, but what really counts is how much you learn, how much you grow, and how willing you are to ask for help."

For Alberto, studying law at UWL wasn’t just about textbooks, it was about people, purpose, and finding the confidence to take the next step. Find out more here if you'd like to get involved with your SU.
