The Chinese Society

Updated: Apr 22

In his very first year of uni, Xuyuan has created a brand-new society to bring students together; Chinese Society. Within UWLSU, we are lucky that students are ready and willing to form groups that bring together others from the same country and culture.

During Freshers, Xuyuan attended lots of events put on by the Students’ Union, meeting new friends by getting involved. This is something that came pretty easily for him, but he realised it might not be the same for other students in the same position. Coming over to study in London with English as a second language can be challenging and Xuyuan has met many Chinese students struggling to meet people because of this. Having this barrier can really hold someone back, especially if they’re shy or nervous in a new environment. Xuyuan thought it would be amazing to have a Chinese Society, so people could easily find a group where they feel comfortable!

“Now we have Chinese Society, where we can make a group and be in it together”

From Xuyuan’s first day on campus, he felt welcomed into UWL. With his lecturer ready to greet students at the beginning of induction, Xuyuan instantly felt more comfortable knowing how friendly everyone is. He has loved his lessons and teachers, as well as taking advantage of the facilities on offer! As a society, the group are working to get in touch with potential UWL students through WeChat, a Chinese social media platform. They want to let people know how great their experience has been at uni and why it’s worth studying at UWL.

Now, working alongside the Students’ Union, the Chinese Society are fully established and already have a group of members. Xuyuan is grateful for all the help they have received from the SU, to build a network for Chinese students.

“UWLSU gave us a space, gave us a chance to build the Chinese society.”

With a lot of the Society’s members studying music, you can expect to see a lot of live music and music-centred socials and events from the group! There’s also lots of opportunities to network with others in the same industry, meaning artist from across UWL can connect with each other.

This is an amazing opportunity for Chinese students to meet each other, form friendships, and feel more comfortable in their new life in London. Click here to join the Chinese Society.
